Making connections

Community Involvement

One of our main guiding principals at Rock Soil & Seed is building connections. We are excited to showcase below some of the volunteer projects we have been involved in.

Nature Play Garden Sir Alexander Mackenzie

A nature play garden design is in the works for this unused area of the elementary school field. The purpose of the design is to augment the playground with an interactive green space  for the kids that introduces them to permaculture principals of design.

The Mackenzie PAC will be funding the build along with help from the parents and community. Stay tuned for more info and images on this exciting project.

Shared growing Community Garden Hub

The shared growing community garden was designed for a neglected city site in the Kensington Cedar-Cottage neighbourhood. The garden is planted with a mix of fruit producing understory trees and perennial berry bushes. There is a shared tool crib shed that promotes community connections and education around organic land care practice.

Revisioning UBC CHildren's Learning Garden

Shannon worked on this design along with 3 other cohorts from her UBC Permaculture Design Course. The The Permaculture zone is designed to engage the children in the principals of succession. It is a an area where the kids can run and explore through pathways that lead from ground cover into herbaceous perennial beds into thickets filled with berries and roses, into canopy of understory fruit and native trees and ending in the Native Mature forest. The zone will use and value diversity in species and offer examples of how high intensity small scale solutions can produce a bounty of fruit and pollinating species.
